New coach wants ODU to become "the best volleyball school in Virginia." Local talent could help.

Sixteen months before coaching Old Dominion's inaugural women's volleyball game, coach Fred Chao spoke to staff, fans and media for the first time.

Old Dominion president John Broderick and athletic director Wood Selig introduced Chao, 46, as the school's first women's volleyball coach Monday at the Ted Constant Center.

"This search was different than most head-coaching searches," Selig said, "because it wasn't about finding the right replacement. It was about locating an entrepreneur who could become the CEO of a start-up operation."

Women's volleyball becomes ODU's 17th NCAA Division I sport and the team will play in a renovated Jim Jarrett administration building in the fall of 2020.
