It was a tale of two halves for the 11th-ranked Old Dominion in a 4-2 Big East field hockey loss to No. 2 UConn on Friday at L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
Though the Monarchs (7-1, 1,1) trailed 1-0 at halftime, they had momentum on their side after stopping three consecutive penalty corner opportunities as the first half expired. When play resumed, the Monarchs got on the board quickly as Merle Knoblock directed a pass toward Ashleigh Thomas, who chipped in the ball over UConn’s diving goalkeeper to tie the score at 1.
The celebration quickly faded as Cecile Pieper tallied her first of two goals, finding the back of the net just over a minute after Thomas’ goal.
