Monarchs can't climb out of early hole at U.Va.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Nate Eikhoff’s RBI single capped a three-run first inning Tuesday, and Virginia held on for a 4-2 win over Old Dominion in a nonconference baseball game at Disharoon Park.

A Bryce Windham single put the Monarchs (16-12) on the board in the third inning before the Cavaliers (17-12) answered with a run in the bottom half.

Vinnie Pasquantino cut the lead to two with an RBI single in the seventh, but the Monarchs failed to get a runner past first the rest of the way.

U.Va. used five pitchers and ODU used seven, with Devin Ortiz (2-0) earning the win with 22/3 innings of relief and Hickory High grad Hunter Gregory (2-2) being chased after giving up three runs on four hits over two innings.
