When Conference USA commissioner Judy MacLeod spoke to the Norfolk Sports Club last month, she said something that piqued my interest:
Amateur college athletics are under attack in the courts, she said, adding that Conference USA is a party to eight lawsuits, and that the bigger conferences have been sued even more frequently.
"I don't know if the model (in college athletics) we have now is sustainable," she added.
It was a sobering comment, one that led me to do a little research. Most of the lawsuits have been well-covered in the media. Some have to do with concussions, others with compensation for athletes beyond scholarships.
