Jeff Capel Jr., the former Old Dominion men’s basketball coach whose battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease was chronicled by his son this year, died Monday. He was 64.
Capel coached at ODU from 1994-2001 and led the Monarchs to a memorable NCAA tournament upset of Villanova.
Fayetteville State University, where Capel once played and coached, released the news.
“The Fayetteville State University family is saddened by the passing of one of its most respected alumni and former coaches,” Chancellor James Anderson said in a statement.
“Coach Capel and his family are held in high regard by FSU, its alumni and supporters and he will be missed.
