Jeff Capel Jr., the former Old Dominion men's basketball coach whose battle with Lou Gehrig's disease was chronicled by his son early this year, has died.
Capel coached the men’s basketball team at Old Dominion from 1994-2001 and led the Monarchs to their memorable NCAA tournament upset of Villanova. He was 64.
Fayetteville State University, where Capel once played and coached, released the news.
“The Fayetteville State University family is saddened by the passing of one of its most respected alumni and former coaches,” Chancellor James Anderson said in a statement.
“Coach Capel and his family are held in high regard by FSU, its alumni and supporters and he will be missed.
