Jeff Newberry communicates with a teammate. The Cowboys defeated the East Central Tigers 94-66 in an exhibition in Gallgher-Iba Arena on Nov. 6.
During practices, the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team uses a point system to evaluate and rank all of the Cowboys, but instead of focusing on scoring, the system favors players who do the work that often goes unnoticed.
“Taking charges, boxing out, getting rebounds, assists,” Cowboys swingman Jeff Newberry said. “The dirty work, that’s how you get the points. They want to see who’s going in there and getting after it.”
Ford, the Cowboys’ coach, and his staff calculate each player’s stats using the point system and post them on a large white board after every practice.
