OSU softball: Kenny Gajewski embraced Cowgirl history to build a WCWS-level program

STILLWATER — Not long after he became Oklahoma State’s softball coach four years ago, Kenny Gajewski gathered his players together to ask them a question.

One player, All-American third baseman Vanessa Shippy, raised her hand. No one else recognized the name of the former OSU coach who was responsible for the program’s first six trips to the Women’s College World Series, coaching the Cowgirls to prominence — and more than 900 wins — from 1979-2001.

“It crushed me,” Gajewski said. “It was one of the saddest days I had here.
