Dean Heil, who won two NCAA championships at Oklahoma State, qualified for the men’s senior freestyle World Team Trials tournament at 65 kilograms with a 5-2 win over Ohio State’s Joey McKenna on Friday at the Last Chance Qualifier in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Heil went 3-0 during the day, including 10-0 technical fall victories over Ryan McGuire and former Big 12 rival Bryce Meredith.
The World Team Trials — which will be May 17-18 in Raleigh, North Carolina — will determine the 30 remaining Final X spots. The two Final X events — Final X Rutgers on June 8 and Final X Lincoln on June 15 — establish who will compete for the United States at the World Wrestling Championships in October in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
