Axel Alvarez of Oklahoma had his run in the NCAA Individual Tennis Championships end Thursday with a loss in the second round in Waco, Texas.
The reigning Big 12 Player of the Year and college tennis’ No. 1-ranked player lost to No. 35 Tony Lupieri of Baylor 6-4, 6-4 after giving up a break in each set. It was the fourth singles match in as many days for Alvarez and his sixth in the last eight days.
Alvarez had advanced to the second round with a three-set, come-from-behind win over No. 18 Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss on Wednesday.
