NEW ORLEANS — Ron Smith had no way of knowing Mike Gundy would become the head coach of a major-college football team.
It's hard to predict what teenagers will do in five minutes, much less what they will do with the rest of their lives.
Still, there was plenty Smith did know about Gundy when Smith was offensive coordinator at Midwest City High and Gundy was his quarterback. The kid was smart. Talented. Driven.
Different, actually, than any other player Smith had ever coached.
"He was the first quarterback we had who called his own plays," said Smith, now the head coach at Victory Christian in Tulsa.
