Samantha Clakley didn't think she would walk out of the hospital diagnosed with diabetes.
Clakley, a junior pitcher on the Oklahoma State softball team, was visiting the doctor for a checkup her senior year of high school in Carthage, Texas. The needle pricked her arm, drawing blood for a routine procedure.
The results that came back were bewildering to Clakley and her family.
Clakley was told she had Type 2 diabetes.
“Everyone was like, ‘That doesn’t make any sense,’” Clakley said. “Type 2 is when you’re extremely overweight, and it’s an unhealthy disease. I was in the best shape of my life in high school, and no one understood why I had it.
