Martin played both running back and linebacker for Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas, but was being recruited as a linebacker for OSU. He has the talent and skillset to play both linebacker or safety, a versatility that OSU has really put an emphasis on when recruiting on the defensive side of the ball. He was also named the District 6-4A-II Defensive Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore in 2018.
