Knowles, Oklahoma State's defensive coordinator, was neighbored by four other coordinators from across the country. Each competing for the same prize at an award ceremony in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The Broyles Award, given to the nation's best assistant coach.
Knowles didn't succeed in acquiring the award, instead given to Michigan's offensive coordinator Josh Gattis on Tuesday.
Prior to the winner being announced, Knowles gave a speech about earning the recognition from being a Broyles finalist.
