Hayley Carter stood silently.
In Athens, Georgia, Cardinal fans roared at the sight of the Stanford women’s tennis team’s victory against North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
The loss put Carter’s magnificent four-year career in Chapel Hill to an abrupt end. Going into the match, Carter sensed it could be the end of the road for her as a Tar Heel.
It didn’t make the defeat any easier to swallow.
“I had a sense of like, ‘It’s fine,’” Carter said. “But then the next day when I woke up, that’s when it really hit me.
