It was her first race of the season, but her performance looked championship-ready.
Kaela Edwards opened up the 2017 indoor track and field season with a collegiate record in the 1,000 meters at the Holiday Inn Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her time of 2 minutes, 40.79 seconds broke Angel Piccirillo’s February mark of 2:40.82.
This is the second time Edwards has beaten out Piccirillo for first place. In March, Edwards outkicked Piccirillo for the women’s one mile NCAA title.
Edwards’ mark is not an NCAA record, however. Because the Holiday Inn Invite was not an NCAA-sanctioned event, the mark does not qualify for the NCAA record book.
