And it's hardly over yet, with Mercer still in his prime and playing for a playoff contender in a city that's experiencing a baseball rebirth.
Drafted in the third round of the of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft by the Pirates, Mercer worked his way through every level of the minor leagues before making his big-league debut in 2012 and stuck with Pittsburgh for good in 2013, now holding down the club's starting shortstop job.
