When Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph threw the ball to the sidelines, the game should have been over. OSU should have escaped with a 27-24 victory. Walt Anderson, the coordinator of football officials for the conference, said that much.
Instead, the officials called intentional grounding and gave an extra play to Central Michigan, despite time having expired. According to NCAA rules, play is not continued after time has expired on penalties that include a loss of down, as intentional grounding does.
The referees messed up, Anderson said.
However, the result of the game will not be reversed.
