It seemed like a routine win as Joe Smith’s hand was raised following the 170-pound Class 6A state finals.
The Stillwater senior showed no emotion on a night inside State Fair Arena that is known for dramatic celebrations by those who reach the pinnacle of their weight class.
“My emotions probably didn’t show exactly how I was feeling, because I was really excited,” he said.
But The Oklahoman’s All-City Wrestler of the Year was likely only being respectful to the honor of winning a state title with those words.
Smith went 46-0 as a senior with his final win coming by major decision, 18-10, over Norman North’s Hayden Hansen.
