Going to the Cape Cod League last offseason changed West Virginia’s Alex Manoah.
Manoah went to the Cape as a tall pitcher with plenty of tools but little finesse.
But the 6-foot-7 Manoah returned from the summer league with a slider that complemented his at-times overpowering fastball and a shift in mentality.
Manoah went 8-3 with a 1.91 ERA, setting a Mountaineers record with 125 strikeouts. He also walked just 22 — less than two per start.
“There was some immaturity my first two years, and I just tried to come out and blow fastballs by people,” Manoah said recently.
