With two quick outs in the top of the fifth inning, Southwest Covenant baseball coach Jeff Deckard’s thoughts started to turn toward the bottom half in what was a tie game.
“How we were going to get them on, squeeze him in,” Deckard said.
That didn’t happen.
Things cratered quickly on the Patriots as No. 1-ranked Wright City scored five in the inning en route to an 11-4 win in the first round of the Class A state tournament Thursday at Palmer Field.
The Lumberjax scored two runs in the first thanks to four Southwest Covenant errors, before the Patriots came back with four in the second — with the help of three errors — to take the lead.
