NORMAN — A Truman Elementary School team won the Design+Do competition at the University of Oklahoma Tom Love Innovation Hub.
The students won the competition with their Sooner Slide concept, a parade float design that would allow people in a crowd to use mini footballs to send someone down a slide.
Design+Do, sponsored by Devon Energy, allowed students at eight Norman Public Schools to use their ingenuity and the latest tools to create never-before-seen projects.
For five weeks, the fifth-graders put their ideas for parade floats on paper. Then, they visited the Tom Love Innovation Hub, where mentors from Engage Learning Oklahoma helped them use laser cutters, woodworking machines and other high-tech tools to bring their ideas to life.
