Scott Frost went rogue Monday. The Nebraska football coach suggested that if the Big Ten canceled its 2020 fall football season, the Cornhuskers could do what they did for more than a century. Play football outside the dominion of the Big Ten.
And hearts from North Platte to Poteau quivered like a schoolgirl. First for Frost’s defiance, then for the hope of a blessed reunion.
Let’s first squelch a permanent reconciliation. The Cornhuskers aren’t coming back to the Big 12, come hell or pandemic. Too much academic money in the Big Ten. Too much ivory-tower prestige. The Huskers athletically miss the Big 12, but if you didn’t already know that universities still make decisions independent of the gridiron, you know it now.
