OU's Darlington wins Campbell academics award

NEW YORK -- Oklahoma center Ty Darlington has won the William V. Campbell Trophy, given to college football's top scholar-athlete.

Darlington was presented with the trophy Tuesday night at the National Football Foundation's award banquet at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan.

He was chosen among 12 finalists from all levels of college football. All the finalists received $18,000 post-graduate scholarship funds. As the winner, Darlington receives an additional $7,000.

Darlington is an Arts and Science major with a 3.9 grade-point average.

The other finalists were E.K. Binns from Navy; Jacoby Boren from Ohio State; Jake Brendel from UCLA; Taveze Calhoun from Mississippi State; Derek Crittenden from Montana; Jordan Dobrich from Nevada; Spencer Drango from Baylor; Blake Frohnapfel from Massachusetts; Jordan Italiano from Kent State; Hank Spencer from Mount Union; and Jason Vander Laan from Ferris State.
