OU softball: How flying into home plate became a Sooner tradition

NORMAN — Caleigh Clifton spread her arms horizontally into wings and flew into home plate where her Sooner teammates were huddled.

The chalk from third base to home was her runway, as it has been for dozens of Sooners who have hit home runs in the last eight years. Oklahoma launched five of them Saturday against Northwestern as it booked a trip to the Women’s College World Series.

The flying celebration is a staple at Marita Hynes Field, but some who partake in the transformation from ballplayer to plane aren’t exactly sure why they’re doing it.

“I have no idea,” sophomore Jocelyn Alo said.
