Boren, who has been in his present post since 1994, made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday afternoon on the OU campus. He said he would remain president until June 30. If a new president has not been named by then, however, he said he would remain until one is appointed.
The 76-year-old Boren (he will turn 77 next April) said he believed that now was the right time because the university has never been stronger (sounds very similar to the reasoning given by former Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops, when he announced his retirement in June).
