NORMAN — OU men's basketball forward Brady Manek was named the Jim Thorpe Oklahoma Athlete of the Year on Friday by the Oklahoma District of the Amateur Athletic Union.
Manek, a senior from Harrah, was presented the award at practice. Previous Sooners athletes to win the award include Sam Bradford, Baker Mayfield, Gerald McCoy and Jason White.
The Oklahoma AAU's executive committee determined the winner, considering nominations of amateur athletes with Oklahoma ties in any sport.
"It's a great honor to win this award," Manek said in a release. "Being from Oklahoma, it's always special to be associated with Jim Thorpe and his legacy.
