OU football: Trey Sermon losing featured role in crowded backfield

NORMAN — Trey Sermon has gone from featured running back to one of several options in the Oklahoma backfield.

The junior, who led OU in carries last season, did not record a rushing attempt last Saturday against Texas.

“Some of it is the way the game went,” coach Lincoln Riley said Monday.

Riley estimated that Sermon played the second-most snaps of any running back, but carries were spread among Kennedy Brooks, Rhamondre Stevenson and T.J. Pledger.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts continues to lead the Sooners in rushing attempts (74) and rushing yards (630).

“We’ve had other very talented backfields in the last several years here,” Riley said, “but I don’t know that we’ve had one with as much depth as we currently have right now.
