NORMAN — Since he committed to OU in the summer of 2017, Spencer Rattler was expected to be the Sooners starting quarterback in 2020.
Now, that's official after Lincoln Riley announced Tuesday that the redshirt freshman would start the season opener Sept. 12 against Missouri State.
The decision mirrors the timeline of other quarterback decisions since Riley's arrival in Norman — Baker Mayfield over Trevor Knight in 2015, Kyler Murray over Austin Kendall in 2018 and Jalen Hurts over Tanner Mordecai last season.
Riley said Mordecai had missed "70 to 75 percent" of fall camp, though he didn't elaborate on why Mordecai missed time.
