OU football: Quarterback Baker Mayfield has gone from surprise walk-on to potential starter

NORMAN — When he arrived on campus in January 2014, the only person on the football staff quarterback Baker Mayfield had contacted was Merv Johnson.

Johnson, Oklahoma’s director of football operations, runs the Sooners’ walk-on program.

Instead of moving into Headington Hall, the gleaming new dorm that holds all of Oklahoma’s athletes that live on campus, Mayfield settled into the sixth floor at the much older and much less gleaming Adams Center.

“By NCAA rules and my release, I couldn’t talk to any coaches,” Mayfield said. “So I enrolled in school and I was a student living in those dorms for three weeks.
