Longtime OU football assistant coach and radio analyst Merv Johnson announced his retirement Friday after 41 years with the Sooners.
Johnson, 84, joined the OU staff in 1979 as an assistant coach under Barry Switzer and remained with the Sooners as an assistant coached until 1997. He then started a 20-year tenure as the team's director of operations. He joined the radio booth in 1999.
Johnson worked 513 consecutive OU football games from 1979 to 2019.
"Not many men have been more ingrained with OU and football than Merv Johnson," OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said.
