OU football journal: Sylvie looking like a backup nickel

Freshman defensive back Chanse Sylvie is making a strong bid for playing time so far in camp.

Sylvie arrived in the spring and appears to be the likely backup behind Will Johnson at nickelback.

“Chanse came in early with 15 practices under his belt and really grasped the defense better than you would think a freshman could,” defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks said. “He's picked up right where he left off.”

Sylvie is also spending time at free safety, where Ahmad Thomas is starting.

Cooks would like to have a second group of defensive backs to use regularly in games to keep the starters fresh.
