NORMAN — Devin Montgomery was driving down a country road near Cashion with his girlfriend about two weeks ago when his phone buzzed.
It was a text from Oklahoma running backs coach Jay Boulware.
“Hey, I'm going to get you ready,” Boulware texted. “You're going to be the third back.”
With Samaje Perine knocked out for several games with an injury the week before against Kansas State and two backups lost to season-ending injuries, Montgomery's time had come quicker than he could've imagined.
Saturday night against Kansas, the freshman from Maryland was called upon for the first time.
