HOUSTON--The day after his Oklahoma career ended, Buddy Hield received some small consolation.
Hield was named the winner of the James Naismith Award as the college basketball player of the year Sunday. The award is given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
The other finalists for the award were Michigan State's Denzel Valentine, Kentucky's Tyler Ulis and Virginia's Malcolm Brogdon. All were in attendance Sunday.
Hield was joined at the downtown Houston ceremony by his teammates, who entered the Hobby Center looking somber a day after a 95-51 loss to Villanova in the Final Four.
Hield averaged 25 points and 5.
