OSU baseball: How Cowboys' pitching coach Rob Walton turned Trevor Boone into one of the most feared hitters in the Big 12

Oklahoma State outfielder Trevor Boone was a bit surprised when Rob Walton approached with some advice in early March.

“See his high arm slot,” Walton told Boone, pointing to video of Oklahoma State’s next pitching opponent. “So you want to look from his hat and up.”

Walton, the Cowboys’ pitching coach, doesn’t usually spend much time focusing on Oklahoma State’s hitters. Instead, that’s largely head coach Josh Holliday’s responsibility.

It’s something the small things that can lead to big turnarounds and nearing the end of a big season — Boone is hitting .294 with 19 home runs and 51 RBI entering Friday’s regional opener against Harvard at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark — the junior points to that moment as perhaps the turning point.
