A night after he became Oklahoma's all-time leading freshman scorer, Sooners point guard Trae Young was named one of 10 semifinalists for the James A. Naismith Trophy honoring the top player in college basketball.
Young leads the nation in both scoring (28.0 points per game) and assists (9.0). No player in college basketball history — since assists were added as an official statistic in the early 1980s — has finished a season leading the country in both categories.
Earlier in the season, Young looked like the runaway winner of the national player of the year awards but his recent struggles combined with the Sooners' struggles to win have lessened his chances at the awards.
