A program like Oklahoma, which has been around since 1895 and dominated the college football landscape since World War II, isn’t short on tradition.
There’s the “Boomer Sooner” chant between the two halves of Owen Field, the horses, Boomer and Sooner, and the covered wagon they pull. There’s Mex the Dog, OU’s first official mascot, who was adopted by a U.S. Army medic in 1914 and brought back to Oklahoma. And there’s, of course, the famed Oklahoma Drill, developed by Bud Wilkinson.
But Oklahoma’s most meaningful tradition, which is far greater than any other in the state held by Oklahoma State or Tulsa, is the “Play Like A Champion Today” sign the players touch exiting the locker room before each game, home or away.
