NORMAN — Steve Spurrier Jr. has joined the Oklahoma football staff in an off-the-field capacity, sources told The Oklahoman.
Spurrier — the son of legendary former Florida and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier — was wide receivers coach at OU from 1999-2001, a tenure that included the 2000 national championship. He left the Sooners to join his dad’s Washington Redskins staff, and worked under his dad at South Carolina the last 11 years as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.
He also spent one year coaching at Arizona under current OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops.
The elder Steve Spurrier retired from South Carolina in the middle of last season.
