Cooks spent four years with the Sooners. Before that he served in the same role at Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Western Illinois.
Cooks was well-regarded for his ability to recruit, bringing in major targets like Brendan Radley-Hiles, Robert Barnes, Jeramiah Criddell, but the Sooners struggled to defend the pass, particularly in 2018 when they finished 129th out of 130 NCAA teams in passing yards allowed. Texas Tech, Kerry Cooks’ next destination, was the only Division I school ranked behind the Sooners in that category last year.
Cooks is the second defensive staff member to depart the Sooners since Alex Grinch was announced as the new defensive coordinator on Jan.
