Hobby, a duel-sport student athlete at Oklahoma in the late 1950s, died this past week at the age of 81.
Offered a contract to play professional baseball out of Midwest City High School, Hobby elected instead to follow his dream and pursue a college education and play both baseball and football at the University of Oklahoma.
“The money sounded good,” Hobby told The (Oklahoma City) Oklahoman in a 1991 interview and recalled this week by Oklahoman sport columnit Berry Tramel.
“We were going to ask for five figures. But I grew up in the shadows of Owen Field, so any kid growing up in Oklahoma wants to play there.
