Oklahoma football: Bob Stoops calls Mark Mangino's departure from Iowa State 'unfortunate'

NORMAN — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops called his old friend Mark Mangino’s departure from Iowa State “unfortunate” and said he was sad to hear about it.

Mangino was Stoops’ offensive coordinator on Oklahoma’s 2000 national championship team. As head coach, Mangino led Kansas to its greatest football success ever — including a 2008 Orange Bowl victory — before leaving the school after accusations that he emotionally abused players.

Mangino got back into big-time college football as Iowa State’s offensive coordinator last season, but parted ways with the Cyclones earlier this week.

Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said he couldn’t get on the same page with Mangino but declined to say whether it was a firing or a resignation.
