The NCAA Division I Board of Directors voted Thursday to rescind the recent ban on so-called “satellite camps.”
The camps are the result of a loophole in the NCAA rulebook, whereby Football Bowl Subdivision coaches co-host camps with smaller colleges or high schools in places where NCAA rules forbid them from hosting official camps.
Earlier this month, the NCAA Division I Council banned satellite camps, but intense backlash from several coaches — including Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy — as well as recruits and their families caused the NCAA to reverse course.
Coaches began taking advantage of satellite camps nearly 10 years ago after the NCAA limited coaches to hosting summer camps within 50 miles of their home campus or within their home state.
