NCAA Golf Championship: Sooners within one win of the national championship

The Sooners eliminated Illinois on Tuesday afternoon at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., which advances them to the final match in the NCAA Championship for the first time in the history of Oklahoma men’s golf.

Oklahoma will face defending national champion Oregon, a 3-2 winner over top-seeded Vanderbilt in the other semifinal match.

OU won the national championship in golf in 1988 and finished second in 1989 and 1938, but that was long before the current championship format, which consists of 72 holes of stroke play followed by an eight-team, match-play playoff, implemented in 2009.
