Last year, a debacle of sorts unfolded in the Big XII as the conference was left out of the playoff picture. Many criticized the leadership who remained unable to crown "One True Champion," a slogan used season long. Others sited the general lack in strength of schedule as the main set back particularly when arguing against the Baylor Bears. In a game driven by money, Commissioner Bob Bowlsby set the wheels in motion to change the perception of the conference.
Officially, all Big XII football programs must schedule at least one non-conference match-up against an "autonomy conference institution" which includes the ACC, Big 10, PAC-12, SEC, and Notre Dame annually (apparently leaving out BYU).
