Kyler Murray named Sooners' starting quarterback for Florida Atlantic opener

The Oklahoma Sooners have a new starting quarterback.

On Wednesday, the team tabbed redshirt junior Kyler Murray to start the Sept. 1 opener against Florida Atlantic.

Murray, a 5-foot-10 redshirt junior from Allen, Texas, was the backup last season to Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield. He completed 18 of 21 pass attempts for 359 yards with three touchdowns last season and rushed for 142 yards on 14 carries.

Redshirt sophomore Austin Kendall will enter the season as Murray's backup.

"Kyler did a really nice job in camp," Riley said in an OU release. "It was really a great competition between Austin and him, one that we carried on longer than maybe even we expected because of how well both guys played.
