Maggie Nichols wrote only one word on her Twitter account Thursday afternoon.
Heartbroken.
It was a sentiment shared by thousands of college athletes around the country. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, every winter sports championship was canceled by the NCAA and the NAIA in a matter of a few hours. In an instance, seasons were over.
For some, careers were over, too.
Nichols is likely among them. Unless the NCAA decides to provide seniors like her a reprieve with an extra year of eligibility — it is strongly considering doing so for spring-sport athletes but has yet to indicate what it might do for winter sports — the OU gymnast has done her last all-around competition.
