The NCAA this week implemented a new overtime rule intended to keep college football games from getting too long. Beginning with the fifth overtime, teams will alternate 2-point conversion plays until a winner is determined.
Which is sort of like having tsunami insurance in Oklahoma. It can’t hurt. Almost certainly won’t help.
College football has adopted an overtime philosophy of entertainment: keep the spigot open; play as long as possible. The more football, the better.
Except multiple overtimes have become the standard, not the exception. Giving offenses at the opponent 25-yard line is a primrose path to a touchdown.
