Spent a few days in Atlanta last week at the Associated Press Sports Editors convention, a gathering of sports department leaders featuring educational workshops and informational panels.
When I found myself in a room with Greg McGarity, the athletic director at Georgia, I decided I had to chat with him.
The subject: college football scheduling.
Georgia, you might remember, is the latest big-name program to do a home-and-home series with Oklahoma. Announced last month, the Sooners and Bulldogs will play in Norman in 2023, then in Athens in 2031.
As McGarity talked about why Georgia was willing to do the deal — usually the games in a home-and-home series are played much closer together — he said something in passing that I honestly didn’t catch at the time.
