TAHLEQUAH — Walking up to start her round in the Class 3A girls state golf tournament at Cherokee Springs on Wednesday, Plainview freshman Addie Norton's nervousness was running high.
It was the freshman's first state tournament appearance, and starts have been rough at times for her this season.
But her coach, Taylor Howard, has been working with Norton on slowing things down a bit early in rounds and not taking unnecessary chances.
It worked.
Norton shot a first-round 73 to take a one-stroke lead into Thursday's second and final round.
“She just played smart golf and kept herself out of trouble on a lot of holes,” Howard said.
