Free agency has come slowly to college athletics. But come it has.
Athletes on all levels below Division I can transfer and be eligible immediately. Athletes in Division I can do the same in all but five sports — football, baseball, ice hockey and men's and women's basketball.
Athletes in those five sports have been granted loopholes. Graduates are granted free transfer. Athletes from schools placed on probation can transfer if the postseason ban spans at least the length of their remaining eligibility. And occasional hardship waivers are granted for personal reasons.
Now the Big 12 Conference is sponsoring a proposal that would extend those freedoms even more.
